Until I got married last year and became part of a new family, it was my practice to rebel against celebrating the holiday called Thanksgiving Day. My reason? I felt that thanks should not be reserved for just one day of the year.

I still feel that way, but, let’s face it, in our rush, rush, ever-connected world, it’s a rare day when one isn’t sitting in traffic, or working late, or trying to catch up on email, or just plain taking care of life. Earlier today I was trying to schedule a get-together with one of my best friends. Both our calendars are so full, I’ll be happy if I can see her before the New Year.

So I’m grateful for this holiday. I’m grateful for every moment I get to spend with the people I care about.

Whether or not you observe the Thanksgiving holiday this 4th Thursday in November, I’d like to share some words of wisdom, not just for one day of the year, but for all days.

As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.
~John F. Kennedy

For several weeks now I have been dealing with a service provider who does not seem to actually provide any service. The electronic device that supposedly allows me to use this service has turned out to be too complex even for the technical support team of the company that sent it to me.

My frustration with both the device and the company have led me to long for “the days when we banged a couple of rocks together.” Every time I say this, my husband warns me, “Be careful. You might get your wish.” I’m not sure, in light of all that is going on with our world, that it would be a bad thing.

Instead of a long discourse on politics, the downside of technology, Native American prophecy and the end of the Mayan Calendar, I will simply pass on this wise observation:

Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius — and a lot of courage — to move in the opposite direction.
~Albert Einstein

On the 5th anniversary of the September 11th attacks, Wired published its own color coded alert system in order to shed a little perspective on the public’s fear of dying at the hand of a terrorist. Even in a post 9-11 world, one is still more likely to get run over by a bus or drown in the bathtub. Yet we continue to bathe and cross the streets. To succumb to fear of dying is to become one of the walking dead.

As the rumors circulate about a Karl Rove sponsored October Surprise, I thought I’d offer some pre-emptive words of wisdom. Here, for your reflection, is one of my favorite quotes:

Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of humankind as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or it is nothing at all.
~ Helen Keller
